Highlights
  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet beta leak reveals scrapped Magikarp and Gyarados forms.
  • Leaked convergent forms were reportedly planned as pure Dragon-type Pokemon.
  • Fans are now hoping these cut designs return in Pokemon Winds and Waves.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had one of the biggest leak seasons in the franchise’s history before launch. At that time, the entire Pokedex, images, and even a playable ROM surfaced online. Now, a new beta leak has revealed another hidden secret that remained a mystery for a long time.

According to the new leak, special convergent forms of Magikarp and Gyarados were originally planned for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but they were removed before release. Reports suggest these forms were cut in favor of Toedscool and Toedscruel.

Twitter/X user IcyBoi33 shared screenshots from the beta version showing early Pokedex placeholders. In these leaked entries, both Magikarp and Gyarados were listed as Dragon-type Pokemon. This detail is especially exciting for fans because many players have wanted a Dragon-type Gyarados for years.

SV BETA DISCOVERY:

Both scrapped Land Magikarp and Gyarados convergent forms appeared to have both been Dragon type in the Scarlet and Violet beta.

The leak also suggests that these forms may have been land-based Pokemon. Because of this, fans believe their designs could have included legs or a different body structure. If these forms had made it into the final game, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet would have introduced new pure Dragon-type Pokemon, since the official release did not include any new pure Dragon-type species.

The convergent Pokemon system in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was already quite unique. Wiglett and Wugtrio were made Water-types, giving them an opposite feel compared to the original Ground-type Diglett and Dugtrio. Similarly, Toedscool and Toedscruel received Ground/Grass typing, making them very different from the original Tentacool line.

The leaked Dragon-type forms of Magikarp and Gyarados did not follow this same pattern. Because of this, fans believe the developers may have planned to expand the rules for convergent species. Dragon typing does not directly connect with Water or Flying, which makes these forms even more unique.

Now that Pokemon Winds and Waves is expected to launch in 2027, fans are hoping these scrapped concepts could return in the future. If that happens, Dragon-type Magikarp and Gyarados could become one of the most exciting additions in the series.
