Overwatch’s 10th anniversary celebration was supposed to be an exciting moment for Blizzard, but the event quickly received a negative reaction from fans after launch. Players believe the rewards are too limited and the content does not feel special enough for a game celebrating a full decade.
Overwatch had actually been enjoying a strong comeback this year. After dropping the sequel branding and returning to the original Overwatch identity, the game gained momentum again, and Season 1 was well received by the community. However, the 10th anniversary event has now disappointed many fans. On social media and online forums, players mainly criticized the “Launch Hero Skins,” saying they are only simple recolors and do not feel worthy of a major celebration.
Fans were also unhappy that the event only offers 15 anniversary loot boxes, with just 5 containing legendary skins. In addition, players currently have no meaningful way to earn gold shards, mythic skins, or mythic shards during the event. Because of this, the backlash from the community continued to grow.
The criticism became so large that Overwatch game director Aaron Keller personally addressed the situation on social media. He admitted that the fan complaints were fair and agreed that anniversary rewards should be more than just loot boxes. Blizzard has now announced several changes to improve the event.
According to Blizzard, the number of community loot boxes will be doubled in Week 2 and tripled in Week 3. The company will also reduce the number of matches needed to unlock all rewards down to 60 games. Additionally, during Week 3, players will receive a special 10-Year Anniversary Loot Box that guarantees 4 legendary skins. Overall, players will be able to earn a total of 10 legendary skins during the event.
Despite these changes, many fans still believe the improvements are not enough. One major reason is the special anniversary event currently available in China. Chinese players are receiving login bonuses that include Mythic Shards and even up to 10 Mythic Skins. Because of this comparison, many players around the world feel they are being treated unfairly.
Some fans have also compared the event to Marvel Rivals and its anniversary celebration, which included new game modes, skins, and generous currency rewards. Players argue that a legendary multiplayer title like Overwatch deserved a much bigger and more memorable celebration for its 10-year milestone.
Even so, many players still believe Blizzard can improve the situation in future updates. The company has recovered from controversies and setbacks many times before. Because of this, the community remains hopeful that Overwatch’s anniversary celebration can still become more exciting and rewarding in the future.
