Popular gaming studio Bungie is reportedly going through another difficult period. New reports suggest the studio could soon face another major wave of layoffs, while Destiny 3 is not currently in active development. The news has surprised many fans who expected Destiny 3 to become the next major project after Destiny 2.
According to a Bloomberg report cited by IGN, Bungie is expected to face “significant” layoffs. This development has created even more uncertainty around the studio’s future, especially after years of instability under Sony.
Destiny 2 Final Update Confirmed
The report arrived shortly after Bungie officially confirmed that Destiny 2 will receive its final live-service content update on June 9, 2026. The update is titled Monument of Triumph.
Bungie described the update as a farewell to Destiny 2. The studio also confirmed that the game will not shut down completely. Players will still be able to play Destiny 2 after the update, similar to how the original Destiny remains playable today.
The company explained that Monument of Triumph is designed to make the game more welcoming and accessible for returning players before active development officially ends.
Destiny 3 Is Not in Development Right Now
For a long time, the gaming community believed Bungie might already be working on Destiny 3. However, the latest reports have almost completely ended those expectations.
According to Bloomberg, Bungie is still exploring new ideas and concepts within the Destiny universe. The studio is reportedly preparing prototypes and pitches for possible projects, but none of them have received approval for full production.
This clearly means Destiny 3 is not Bungie’s next major project at the moment. Destiny 2 is entering its final phase, but despite that, a sequel is still not officially lined up for development.
Bungie Is Focusing More on Marathon
Right now, Bungie appears to be focusing heavily on Marathon. The upcoming extraction shooter is considered Bungie’s biggest non-Destiny project in many years.
Reports suggest Bungie leadership previously discussed ways to make Destiny 2 easier for new players. However, the company eventually shifted a large portion of its developers and resources toward Marathon.
Bungie recently shared plans for Marathon Season 2, which launches on June 2. The update will include new PvE modes, better onboarding systems, and gameplay improvements aimed at helping new players get comfortable with the game.
Sony Is Also Facing Financial Losses
Sony acquired Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 billion as part of its live-service gaming strategy. At the time, Sony hoped the deal would strengthen its position in the live-service market. So far, however, the acquisition has not delivered the expected results.
Recent financial reports revealed that Sony recorded a $765 million impairment loss connected to Bungie. Reports also suggest the underperformance of Destiny 2 and Marathon played a major role in those losses.
Bungie Has Already Gone Through Layoffs Before
This is not the first time Bungie has faced layoffs. In 2024, the studio laid off 220 employees, which represented around 17 percent of its workforce.
In addition, another 155 employees were moved into different roles within Sony Interactive Entertainment. At the time, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons blamed rising development costs, economic pressure, and handling too many projects at once for the situation.
Bungie’s Future May Depend on Marathon
For now, Bungie’s future appears highly uncertain. The studio’s success may largely depend on how well Marathon performs. It will also be important for future Destiny projects to move beyond the pitching and prototyping stage.
Destiny 2 will remain playable after its final update, but with Destiny 3 not currently in development and more layoffs reportedly on the way, Bungie appears to be entering one of the most difficult and uncertain periods in its history.
