Bungie has finally shared the update that Destiny 2 fans had been waiting for, but the news brings both excitement and sadness for players. The studio officially confirmed that Destiny 2 will receive its final live-service update on June 9, 2026, after which active development for the game will come to an end.
For the past few months, Destiny 2’s future had remained unclear. After the major March update was delayed, concerns within the community continued to grow. Bungie also became less communicative, making players feel that the game was slowly losing support.
The State of the Game After The Final Shape
The Final Shape expansion gave Destiny 2’s 10-year Light and Darkness saga an emotional conclusion. Fans appreciated the expansion, and at the time it seemed the game was heading in a strong new direction. However, things did not go as planned afterward.
Bungie attempted to begin a new storyline through the Year of Prophecy, but player numbers kept dropping. The Edge of Fate expansion faced criticism because of gameplay and mechanical changes, especially the addition of the Portal feature.
Although the Renegades expansion managed to excite parts of the community again, much of the damage had already been done. The lack of updates and a clear future roadmap only added to player frustration.
Bungie Officially Confirms the End
Back in February, when the Shadow & Order update was delayed until June, players already suspected that things were not going smoothly. Bungie also appeared to shift its focus toward Marathon, which increased concerns even more.
Now, in a detailed blog post, Bungie has officially announced that June 9, 2026 will mark Destiny 2’s final live-service update. After that, the studio will no longer develop major new content for the game.
Even though development is ending, the game itself is not shutting down completely. Players will still be able to play Destiny 2 in the future, similar to how the original Destiny remains playable today.
What to Expect in Monuments of Triumph
Shadow and Order has now officially been renamed Monuments of Triumph. This update is expected to be massive and will include several new features and rewards.
Like previous Moments of Triumph events, this version will not focus only on one year of content. Instead, it will celebrate achievements and Triumphs from across the entire game. Legendary Marks are also returning, along with free armor ornaments, accessories, and weapon rewards.
Bungie also confirmed that smaller character story moments will be included to give the narrative a more meaningful ending. Players can expect callbacks, Easter eggs, and references to older moments from the game.
Director Returns While Portal Steps Aside
After hearing community criticism, Bungie is moving the controversial Portal system out of the spotlight and bringing the Director back as the main activity hub. Many players have been waiting for this change for a long time.
In addition, Pantheon 2.0 is becoming a permanent part of the game. The original Pantheon activity was extremely popular among fans but was only available for a limited time. The new version will feature fresh bosses, rotating encounters, and new rewards.
More Features Arriving in the Final Update
Bungie wants Destiny 2 to end in a memorable way, which is why several highly requested features are being added in the final update.
Players will finally be able to transmog exotic armor. Gambit Ops will receive fresh rewards, Crucible playlists are being updated, and Raid and Dungeon loot systems are also being improved. New class abilities and aspects are also being added.
The biggest surprise is the return of Sparrow Racing League. This fan-favorite mode has been requested by the community for years, and it is now returning with new maps, unique armor sets, and special rewards.
Bungie has confirmed that it will share detailed breakdowns of every feature included in this massive update over the coming weeks.
