The Overwatch 2 mid-Season 20 update is now officially live, bringing major changes to the game. The biggest highlight of this update is the return of the Assault game mode for a limited time in Quick Play. Alongside this, several heroes have received buffs and nerfs, a new Mythic skin has been added, and multiple in-game events have been introduced to refresh the second half of the season.
Season 20 began on December 9, featuring the new melee damage hero Vendetta. At launch, the Winter Wonderland event went live, Doomfist and Wuyang were added to Stadium mode, and the Challenger Leaderboards feature was introduced for Competitive players. Now, the mid-season update focuses on improving balance and keeping gameplay engaging.
The most exciting part of the mid-Season 20 update is the Quick Play Hacked: Assault Returns event. From January 8 to 11, players can once again battle on classic Assault maps such as Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, and Volskaya Industries. This classic 2CP mode from Overwatch 1 returns with Overwatch 2 heroes and updated balance, where attackers must capture two objectives before time runs out.
In addition to Assault, more events are scheduled. Showdown Shuffle runs from January 13 to 26, where heroes automatically change after eliminations, deaths, or assists. This mode also includes random modifiers like smaller hero sizes, double jumps, and increased movement speed, making each match unpredictable. Junkrat’s Loot Hunt takes place from January 22 to 25, allowing players to earn up to nine loot boxes by completing challenges.
Cosmetic content is also a major part of this update. The second Mythic skin of Season 20, Magma Titan Doomfist, features molten visual effects, a customizable gauntlet, and multiple color options. Several new store skins are also arriving, including Cosmic OWL, Borealis, and Heist-themed skins for various heroes.
Hero balance changes are a key part of this patch. Roadhog, Freja, Genji, Illari, Moira, and Zenyatta received buffs to improve their effectiveness. Meanwhile, Doomfist, D.Va, Ashe, Bastion, Symmetra, Vendetta, Venture, and Lucio were adjusted with nerfs to maintain competitive balance.
This update is also a rebase patch, rebuilding the core game systems for long-term stability. While the download size is larger than usual, especially on consoles, it helps reduce the overall game size and improves performance over time.
With only about a month left in Season 20, Season 21 is expected to arrive on February 10 along with the first rank reset of 2026. Competitive players are encouraged to climb as high as possible before then, with the Competitive Drives event from January 30 to February 4 providing additional support.
