EA and BioWare’s online co-op action game Anthem is officially coming to a permanent end. The company has confirmed that the game’s servers will be shut down forever on January 12, 2026. After that date, Anthem will no longer be playable at all, as it is an online-only game and never received an offline mode.
Anthem was designed as part of EA’s strong push toward online experiences, combining third-person action with a shared open world. It was expected to become BioWare’s next major title, but after launch, it failed to meet those expectations. Despite big plans and heavy marketing, Anthem struggled to maintain a strong player base, and its shutdown has now been officially confirmed.
Game preservation has become a major topic within the gaming community, and Anthem is a clear example of the issue. When servers for online games are turned off, those games often disappear forever. In 2024, the “Stop Killing Games” movement began after Ubisoft decided to delist its online racing game The Crew. The movement gained attention through petitions and even received support from European politicians. Fans also tried to save Anthem with a petition in 2025, but EA ultimately made the final decision to shut it down.
According to EA, Anthem’s servers will be shut down on January 12, 2026. After this date, the game will be completely inaccessible, even for players who hoped for a single-player or offline experience. For those who care about game preservation, this shutdown strongly highlights the risks faced by online-only titles.
The closure of Anthem marks a disappointing end for a major AAA game. BioWare built its reputation with successful franchises like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. With Anthem, the studio attempted to launch a brand-new IP. The game focused on Javelin flight suits, allowing players to fly freely, customize abilities, and complete missions in an open world.
At launch, Anthem received mixed reviews. Players praised its flight mechanics and combat, but technical issues, repetitive missions, and a shallow endgame hurt the overall experience. Many felt the game launched in an unfinished state. While updates and seasonal content were planned to improve the game, those plans were canceled just months later.
EA later attempted to reboot Anthem by assigning BioWare Austin director Christian Dailey to lead a small team. Development continued quietly for less than a year before EA announced that all future work was canceled. Although the servers were said to remain active for the “foreseeable future,” it was officially confirmed on July 3, 2025 that the servers would shut down on January 12, 2026.
Fans now have only a few days left to experience Anthem. A long-requested offline mode appears very unlikely to ever happen. It is also unclear whether EA will revisit the Anthem IP in the future, though many fans hope the company will reuse the highly praised Javelin flight mechanics in a new game someday.
