A Bug’s Life is a 3D platformer game inspired by Disney’s movie of the same name. The central character of the game is Flik, who defends his small ant hill from a group of savage grasshoppers in a tiny, chirpy world. While the movie captured the magic and realism of Disney, the polygonal 3D worlds of the game feel somewhat lacking in comparison.
The levels are quite confined and follow a set path, with gameplay mechanics not as polished as those in Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. Flik is controlled using the analog stick, and the D-pad is used to adjust the camera. A major part of the gameplay involves collecting and planting seeds, which help unlock new areas. For instance, placing springy mushroom seeds allows players to jump to higher ledges. Though these mechanics are satisfying, they aren’t very well optimized overall.
The game features 15+ levels offering variety, but the challenges are usually simple, such as avoiding enemies and reaching the end of the level. The graphics and framerate have noticeable flaws, particularly in the Nintendo 64 version, which appears grainy and blurry compared to the PlayStation version.
The sound design is cheerful, capturing the happy atmosphere of the movie well. However, the overall experience is that of an average platformer aimed at younger audiences. Hardcore gamers who’ve enjoyed games like Banjo-Kazooie or Mario 64 might find this game disappointing.
